Why do you need to run SysPrep and what does it do?

SysPrep is used to fix the duplicate machine SID (Security Identifier). You get following error in which you will have to run SysPrep to fix the SID.

We usually get it in two cases, one if you have cloned your server in virtual environment incorrectly or you failed to run it on “Gold Image” created by Windows Deployment Server.

It is used for cloning and pre-configuration of a master Operating System Image.

How to Install Windows Server 2016 Domain Controller Using PowerShell

By default, the Sysprep application Is located at:

C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep

To Sysprep, a Windows Server 2016 go to C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep

Double click on SysPrep.exe

Tick the Generalize tick box and select If you want to Restart or Reboot the Server

At this stage, SysPrep will start the clean-up process of all SIDs and other User-Specific Information

When done, The Welcome screen will look like the screen below

As soon as you hit Next it will ask you to accept the EULA.

Post accepting EULA it will prompt you for “Built-In Administrator” credentials.

It will reboot after it finished with the process and you can go back try to join it to the domain if needed, please be sure to re-configure the hostname and check the IP configuration post-SysPrep.
