1. Assess/Discovery

Assessment and Discovery phase is all about understanding and knowing your current IT Infrastructure in-depth.

It can help you get answers of some frequently asked questions, such as:

Q. What does my environment look like across applications, workloads and data?
Q. Will it run on Azure?
Q. How much will it cost to run on Azure?

In a complex environments with hundreds if not thousands of VMs, applications and servers the manual assessment could be cumbersome therefore we can use certain tools to perform these assessments, In-fact even Microsoft has developed a tool to perform this action.

  1. Assessment of On-Premises applications and Servers:
    Where you collect information of servers, applications, type, configuration, usage etc..
  2. Identification of application and Server dependencies:
    – Post discovery you will have to map any dependencies between your servers and applications.
    – There are tools available in the market which will help you with visual maps of all your applications and workloads, this can help you define your migration path.
  3. Configuration Analysis:
    This part of Assessment will ensure that each workload will function on your cloud platform. for e.g: Is the workload OS supported in Azure?
    – Certain hardware dependencies cannot be replicated into cloud such as UEFI Boot > 4Tb data disk size.
  4. Cost Planning:
    In this step we collect resource usage reports such as CPU, Memory and Storage. It is done to find correct amount of resources utilized by a VM because On Prem VMs are often over provisioned.
